We all know that despite the intensity of our passion to express what we love in business, we will not have a business unless we have customers and make a profit. So what will ensure that we can continue to make a fair and sound profit and grow our customers even as we follow our passion? And what are the important things that determine the level of satisfaction that we experience as business owners and professionals?

I welcome your thoughts on this, and would like to begin the discussion with this...

I was recently inducted into the membership of Rotary International and I learned about a business that was on the brink. It was in 1932 and the business was the Chicago-based Club Aluminum Company. It was on the verge of bankruptcy when Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor was asked to take charge. Taylor drew up a code of ethics for all employees to follow in their business and professional lives, and later became known and adopted as Rotary's 4 Way Test::

"Of the things we think, say or do ask:
1. Is it the Truth?
2. Is it Fair to All Concerned?
3. Will it Build Goodwill and Better Friendships?
4. Will it be Beneficial to all Concerned?"

The 4 Way Test became the guide for sales, production, advertising, and all relations with dealers and customers. The survival of the company was attributed to this simple philosophy which was implemented, adopted and embraced by all the company's employees.

This is a powerful and higher vision, and from my perspective, a key factor in achieving true business success. Now what are your thoughts? What have you discoverd that is critical for true success in your business and your life? Let's open this up for discussion.
